Malaysia: Vanilla farm based on aquaponics, open for tours

Penang introduces a brand new edutainment experience just outside the city – Vanilla Village Experiential Farm Tours. Innovated, built, and managed by Malaysia’s Kairos Agriculture, the smart farm specializes in the cultivation of vanilla and is located on 6 acres of prime land in Permatang Pauh Agro-Park & Integrated Eco-Farm (PPAP) in Seberang Perai, Penang, less than 10 minutes from the Penang Bridge.

The smart farm offers an inside look into the science, processes, and agri-technology of a chemical-free farm. Featuring vanilla, the Kairos team has patented their own planting techniques that regulate and maintain the growth of highly sensitive vanilla plants.

The farm is 100% chemical-free and sustainably built with a customized waterfall design rainwater harvesting system, vermicompost farm, vegetable patch, and fruit orchard. The aquaponic rainwater harvesting pond is also home to over 20,000 Tilapia fishes that help to naturally filter debris and organic waste in the water supply.

Next to hands-on education about the growing methods, visitors are able to pop by The Vanilla Café by Kairos. Created based on a ‘farm-to-table’ concept, the Vanilla Café offers a range of hand-crafted food and drinks that use ingredients grown on the farm itself for a truly delicious taste of sustainably-grown produce.
