New Crop-Scanner offers improved scouting and advice

Biobest's Crop-Scanner platform helps growers quickly and accurately scout their crops. That will significantly improve their IPM strategy. Growers and their Biobest advisors can use the app and web dashboard to monitor pests and diseases and determine crop trends remotely. Also, accurate data collection and visualization give insights that help plan for upcoming seasons.

This smart, data-driven tool widely supports organic crop protection, from pest identification, reporting, and advice exchange to timely and planned intervention. The application works on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and PCs and is available for iOS and Android.

Scouting and registering pests
"It's simple to use and has numerous functionalities," says Sam Gui, Biobest's High Tech IPM Market Development Manager. "Growers can easily draw their greenhouses on the app. They and their staff can indicate where they've seen particular pests and at what stage they are at. You can easily add photos and notes while scouting."

Trap-Scanner
Crop-Scanner also has an automatic counter. This Trap-Scanner feature recognizes six plagues and pests. "The process is as simple as it is effective," Sam explains. "You take a picture of a trap with your phone, and Trap-Scanner counts the different insects, displaying them in Crop-Scanner reports." To make the most of this functionality, Biobest developed special Trap-ID traps. Their design ensures the Trap-Scanner can count the entire mapped area.

Collecting and analyzing data
Growers and their Biobest advisors analyze the data and use that information to devise specific pest control strategies. "The constantly available current and historical monitoring data will lead to better advice and thus a healthier crop. Digitizing data helps inform decisions. Historical data gives insight into previous crops' courses, so growers can hone their planning for upcoming seasons," Sam concludes.

Hightech links
Biobest trains all its advisers to support growers in using the Crop-Scanner. The platform is being offered in phases. Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, the USA, Canada, and Kenya are first on the list. Its functionalities are also being expanded. Soon, growers will be able to link other high-tech applications such as Trap-Eye.
