Switzerland: Grob vegetable farm uses server heat to heat greenhouses

"An intact nature exists only once"

At the Grob vegetable farm in the canton of Thurgau, the focus is on renewable energies. The fact that the heat generated by hot servers is also used is a unique project in Switzerland. The project is being implemented in close cooperation with the Thurgau-based start-up k51 AG. "You always look for ways to improve the production process and optimize operations. An intact nature exists only once," Hans-Jörg Grob tells Schweizer Bauer, adding, "We are responsible for preserving it."

Since March of this year, the Grob family's farm has housed a data center that runs on electricity from its own solar power system, producing heat in the process. And it does so only when it is needed in the greenhouses or can be stored in the water tanks in the form of hot water. The heat storage tanks on the Grobs' premises also allow the servers to operate when the PV system is producing electricity. The company in Schlattingen is, therefore, an ideal partner for k51.
