TSI Italia Open Day organized in Sicily

Shape and flavor of an Italian traditional tomato: pizzutello

Sicilian producers are very interested in pizzutello tomatoes by TSI Italia, especially since they follow the indications of their trusted traders to decide which varieties to focus on. Another open day on a single cultivar was therefore organized in Scoglitti (Ragusa).

We are talking about Pizzillo F1, which, as many who attended the event agreed on, is reminiscent of the tomatoes Italian Boomers used to savor when they were young.

A tomato that makes us travel back in time to when pots used to be put on the stove early in the morning to make "excellent tomato sauce" for unforgettable Sunday lunches. After all, not only is the shape of Pizzillo similar to that of older varieties, but its flavor is just as deep.

The variety boasts firm fruits with excellent specific weight. Plants have a medium vigor with good foliage and regular internodes. The setting is good throughout the entire cycle. Bunches have 8-10 fruits in a herringbone pattern characterized by a classic "pizzo" shape, with uniform grades and an average weight of 35-50 grams. The firm and fleshy pulp conveys a good texture.

Having reintroduced a traditional segment involves a certain responsibility when it comes to flavor, and TSI Italia is well aware of it, as it needs to maintain what the shape of the tomato suggests. Pizzillio maintains the promise of a flavorful fruit that has the right color, good grades, and a deep color of the green parts: all elements that are contributing to the success of this segment.

The "pizzo" structure of the plant is well-visible

Of course, as this is a modern variety, there are some advantages when it comes to genetics, including the resistance to tomato cladosporium, a further guarantee of the overall sustainability of the product, which needs no specific treatments during cultivation. Genetic resistances: HR: ToMV:0-2/TSWV/Va:0/Vd:0/Fol:0,2/Pf:A-E/Ss; IR: TYLCV. Ideal combination with Top Gun rootstocks.
