The Dutch-funded HortiNigeria has collaborated with the Nigerian Agribusiness Group (NABG) and major stakeholders in the agriculture sector to find a solution to the threat of Tuta Absoluta. This is a pest that has resurged to attack tomatoes in Nigeria in 2023, leading to massive losses.
Figures from the National Tomato Growers Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) reveal that losses caused by Tuta Absoluta are enormous as over 300 hectares of land are affected, with each hectare bearing a cost of production of over N2.4 million, totaling an estimated loss of direct investments to over N720 million (€1.4 mln) in states such as Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Plateau mostly affected.
