Fontana Gartenbau Ltd:

Late start of the new growing season in the Oderbruch region

At Fontana Gartenbau Ltd in Manschnow (Märkisch-Oderland), the first plants are currently coming into the greenhouses, six weeks later than usual. In this way, up to 40 percent of the heating costs can be saved, Managing Director Markus Gläser told rbb24. It was the first time, he said, that the tomato and cucumber plants did not enter the greenhouses until the end of February.

Also, the 25 percent higher labor costs due to the minimum wage increase and higher purchase prices, for example, for seeds, let the concerns in the industry grow, they say. "The question for us is, can we still sell the products, which should then actually be much more expensive? Or do we have to reduce production? And that question is a thing for every horticultural business."
