"The objective was to offer a product that is in line with the snacking trend"

Launched in 2020 by Gautier Semences, Starlor - a new premium cherry tomato variety - aims to gain its own place in the market thanks to its yellow color and organoleptic qualities that offer a good balance between flavors, along with high sugar content.

"In creating this variety, the objective was to offer a product that is in line with the snacking trend, the convenience of eating a fruit in only one bite and the pursuit of healthier 'snacks.' With its crunchy texture and flavors, this cherry tomato has already conquered the hearts of consumers," reports Jeanne Gautier, Product and Brand Manager at Gautier Semences. "Thanks to consumer studies we conducted in June 2020 together with external organizations, we were able to measure that Starlor seduced more than 90% of the panel thanks to its remarkable taste qualities. After tasting it, they declared being willing to eat it again, which proves that it absolutely meets the consumer's expectations."

Production-wise, the seed company meant to develop a modern variety equipped for today's growing: a well-balanced plant, easy to manage and adapted to the soil and off-soil production in high-tech and low-tech conditions, as well as in lit greenhouses. "The fruits weigh 12 to 14 grams on average and are very well placed on the compact bunches. The skin and flesh qualities give the fruit a better tolerance to micro-cracking. In addition, the variety has a significant resistance package with, in particular, resistance to Cladosporium, which is very welcome for producers facing the current virus pressure. The intense yellow color of the variety has also been worked on to allow producers to bring an attractive and differentiating product to the shelves.
