Geothermal resources for agriculture: hydroponic and in soil lettuce cultivation using geothermal water and energy

This project aims to introduce a novel approach that integrates low-enthalpy geothermal resources as a source of energy and water into the agri-food chain. The experiment is realized in PAS MEERI-Geothermal Laboratory, Bańska Niżna, Poland. To achieve an appropriate water quality for irrigation, the UF/RO water treatment facility fitted with a typical industrial plant component is used on the basis of natural geothermal water from the Podhale Geothermal System wells (in-situ tests).

The plants were cultivated in hydroponic and soil using three water variants and five types of lettuces (Lactuca sativa). During lettuce cultivation, air temperature, humidity, pH, EC, soil, and hydroponic system temperature were measured. This study presents the physical-chemical analysis of treated geothermal water, which is mixed with tap water and nutrients.
