French strawberries: stable surface areas and slightly higher national production

According to the first estimates on May 1st, 2022, the surface area used to grow strawberries in 2022 is stable compared to 2021, with 4,036 ha. The annual French production is estimated at 76,000 tons, which is 1% higher than last year. The 2022 production campaign started later due to the higher energy costs for greenhouse production. In cumulative terms, at the end of week 18, the harvests were 28% lower than last year but gradually accelerated in May and June. According to the Agreste report, the distribution of the offer is also less balanced than last year.

At the beginning of the marketing campaign, the limited volumes of high quality explained the high prices. In April, prices were lower than last year, especially due to the competition from the Spanish imports.
