Avocados are known and loved for their high nutritional value. They are mainly divided into three strains: West Indies, Mexicans, and Guatemalans. Currently, most fresh avocados in China rely on imports, and domestic products only account for a small part of market volume.
Yunnan Orange and Dragon Agriculture Co., Ltd. started an avocado nursery in Yuanjiang County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, and built a demonstration plantation in Yuanmou County, Chuxiong Prefecture. Mr. Zhenlin Wu from Orange and Dragon Agriculture has shared relevant information about the domestic avocado industry in China with HortidailyChina.
Orange and Dragon Agriculture was founded in 2017 and currently has a team of nearly 10 people. The avocado nursery was put into operation in 2018, and the whole process involves soilless greenhouse grafted plants with strict production process management, which greatly reduces the risk in the later stage. As the weather gets warmer and the temperature rises in Yunnan, spring shoots of avocado seedlings in their nursery are balanced, the plants are strong and tidy, and the growth is gratifying. In 2019, they built a 100-mu (about 7 hectares) avocado demonstration plantation in Yunnan, and they jointly invested in a 500-mu (30 hectares) commodity plantation with their partners in 2021.
Orange and Dragon Agriculture has many years of experience in the introduction of foreign varieties of fruits and has come into contact with many foreign breeders. In addition to avocados, cherries, grapes, pomegranates, and other categories are highly valued by the company. Orange and Dragon Agriculture is committed to the introduction and breeding of varieties of high value-added tropical fruits, providing growers with high-quality plants, technical services, and supply chain solutions. Through cooperation with the world's best professional R & D institutions, they are committed to promoting patented varieties and bringing long-term benefits to their partners. J Orange and Dragon Agriculture has an international professional agricultural technical team and a fully automatic water and fertilizer integration system from Israel, which makes sure the fruit trees grow healthily and provides a solid technical guarantee for growers.
They have noticed that the current avocado planting area in China is growing rapidly. But compared with other fruits, avocado does not have a high volume, and the production has not yet reached an effective scale. The fruit is most suitable for Mediterranean climates, in the regions such as California, Chile, Peru, Spain, Israel and other advantageous production areas. Most of China's planting area is concentrated in tropical rainforest climates, such as Xishuangbanna, Pu'er (Menglian, Jiangcheng), etc. With the rain and heat in the same season, these regions face great pest control pressure. Due to the short history of avocado planting in China, there is a large gap between planting technology and management experience compared with foreign countries, and the quality stability of domestic avocados needs to be improved. Traditional Chinese agriculture is limited by the education, culture, and age of its practitioners, a situation that is difficult to change in the short term. It is believed that with the rejuvenation of agricultural workers, more highly educated professionals will enter the field, and the planting method will be more scientific and efficient.
