Almeria's tomato production fell by 27.77% over the last 5 campaigns

According to Hortoinfo's calculations, which are based on the information of the last 5 campaigns provided by the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucia, Almeria's tomato production has decreased by 27.77% in the last five years.

According to the Andalusian organization, the production of tomatoes in Almeria's greenhouses decreased by about 300 million kilos between the 2016/17 and 2020/21 campaigns, going from 1,004 million kilos to 725.17 million kilos.

Tomato production has also decreased in the province of Granada, although to a significantly lesser extent than in Almeria. Granada went from producing 335.01 million kilos of tomato in 2016/2017 campaign to 326.61 million kilos in the 2020/2021 campaign, i.e. 8.4 million kilos or 2.51% less.

Production area
The production area in Almería has decreased by 16.96%. Almeria's farmers have stopped cultivating tomatoes in 1,717 hectares of greenhouse in the period analyzed, going from 10,124 hectares in the 2016/2017 campaign to 8,407 hectares in the 2020/2021 campaign.

In the province of Granada, the reduction has been much lower and stood at only 4.89%. In the 2016/2017 campaign producers allocated a total of 3,290 hectares of greenhouses to the cultivation of tomatoes, 161 hectares more hectares than the 3,129 hectares used in the 2020/2021 campaign.

Value perceived by farmers
The value of tomato production in both provinces has also fallen sharply in the last five campaigns, by 27.77 percent. The tomato produced by Almeria and Granada went from reaching a value of 984.06 million euro in the 2016/2017 campaign to 710.75 million euro in the 2020/2021 campaign.
