New tool helps plant breeders achieve more from their field trial analyses

Performing statistical analysis in plant breeding can be an overwhelming task. For analysis of field trials, there are many difficult questions to answer before we even start. ASRtriala (ASR trial analysis) helps plant breeders answer their questions by improving their experience, providing robust and in-depth analyses of their single and multi-environment trials.

ASRtriala is a free R tool that offers plant breeders more in-depth analyses of their single and multi-environment trials. It helps makes field trial analysis quicker, simpler and easier to conduct, particularly with accumulated trial data. ASRtriala efficiently combines and analyses multiple datasets to make the most of your investment in phenotypic data.

Complete data-to-decision workflow
ASRtriala is constructed around a workflow for spatial and non-spatial single and multi-environment trial analysis. It takes the user through a simpler, easier, and more robust flow from raw data to genotype selection with seamless and efficient two-stage analysis.

Furthermore, the tool assists in understanding the dynamic of genotype-by-environment (GxE) interaction which can then be used to redefine breeding zones and assist in the selection of genotypes according to their GxE patterns.

The models and methods used in ASRtriala are based on extensive and proven statistical research as well as practical experience, giving users the confidence that they are using innovative analytical procedures.

ASRtriala is the newest member of VSNi’s companion packages for ASReml-R. ASRtriala can be used in R without an ASReml-R license to audit and prepare single and multi-environment trial data for analysis. However, the exceptional benefits of ASRtriala are best achieved when using it together with ASReml-R. Robust integration with ASReml-R improves performance and reduces the risk of error, helping users to run ASReml-R models with simpler functions. Rigorously tested to ensure it meets the highest levels of statistical and scientific credibility, ASReml-R is the go-to analytical tool for thousands of scientists and researchers for its quality and efficient analysis of large and complex datasets.

Salvador Gezan, co-creator, said “ASRtriala is unique. It offers additional and more robust science to provide breeders with insights that previously may have not been so easily available. It helps with choosing the ‘best’ model for your data, making your analysis, quicker, simpler and easier to use on downstream evaluations. This guarantees optimally adjusted predictions for use in single- or multi-environment trial analysis, in future genomic prediction models or GWAS. ”
