New distributor aims to change water management in Egypt

Tulima Farms and Agri-Processing in Egypt is the latest addition to Senmatic's network of distributors. Tulima aims to promote automation and high-tech horticultural solutions, thereby sustaining Egypt’s ambition to make use of its scarce water resources more efficient.

“We are very proud to support Egyptian growers in the transformation from traditional growth solutions to intelligent controller technology that improves resource consumption. Water management is particularly important – to Tulima and to all of Egypt,” tells Seif Salama, Operations Director in Tulima Farms and Agri-Processing, referring to a national ambition to sustain efficient use of water.

Water efficiency is a national matter
Predominantly consisting of desert, water resources in Egypt are limited. The Nile River is the main water resource, and the country receives less than 80 mm of rainfall a year. Still, Egypt wastes 7 to 8 billion cubic meters of its 11 billion cubic meters of water consumption a year. Agriculture consumes about 80-85 % of all available water resources in Egypt, despite only 6 % of the country being arable agricultural land.

“Excessive watering and the use of wasteful irrigation techniques such as flood irrigation partly explains the immense waste. That is why introducing smarter controller technology solutions as from DGT by Senmatic is particularly important to us,” explains Seif Salama.

Improving water resources in agriculture is not just important to Tulima; it is a national matter.

The Egyptian government has initiated national strategies aiming to increase its food self-sufficiency. Egypt is looking towards other countries to gain knowledge and benefit from the experiences of other nations regarding food production. On way to its goal, Egypt is implementing initiatives on efficient use of its limited water resources, better food quality, and a transformation of the food industry’s transport system from farm to fork.

“We are interested in how technology can sustain the national ambition towards increased self-sufficiency. With automation, data from sensors, and clever controller solutions, growers will experience great improvement in their productions. The same is true for our Tulima Farms, where we have installed a new irrigation and fertilizer mixing system from DGT by Senmatic,” says Seif Salama.

“We welcome Tulima as part of our global distribution network and look forward to following their journey towards more efficient use of water. We are champions when it comes to efficient irrigation systems – to the benefit of climate, operating costs, and plant quality,” says Morten Krage, Key Account Manager at DGT by Senmatic.

With its office in Cairo and its production site located between Cairo and Alexandria, Tulima is ready to support all of Egypt.
