March 19

Almeria to be world’s tomato capital for one day

The city of Almeria will become, on Saturday 19th of March, the World’s Tomato Capital with a massive event. Like every year the value of tomato is highlighted as the fruits and vegetables’ jewel in the crown of this Southern Spanish province. Almeria currently exports more than one trillion kilograms of tomatoes’ different varieties to the world every year. It is the most demanded product of the province by far. As consequence, this day has an international character.

Almeria’s tomato has become increasingly popular due to its quality and particular flavor. It is one of the most important ingredients of the healthy and widespread Mediterranean diet. The event is organised by several regional fruits and vegetables firms and sponsored by local and national press (such as La Voz de Almeria and Cadena SER), local administration (Ayuntamiento de Almeria), provincial administration (Diputacion de Almeria), regional administration (Junta de Andalucia) and the financial group Cajamar.

This will be the 8th edition of the event that serves to showcase the most famous product of this part of Andalusia to the world. Locals, certainly, live it with pride. Thousands of people are expected to come and enjoy a day full of fun.

Schedule: Tomato Day starts at 10.30 am and ends at 2.30 pm.

The various activities include welcome healthy breakfasts, cooking exhibitions, products tastings sessions (including Gazpacho; traditional Andalusian cold soup based on tomato), charity funding, music performances, games for children, and awards given to different personalities and businesses.

Program
Attendants will be able to go through all different tomato varieties available displayed at various stands. Tomatal and Vocito, the event’s mascots, will be looking forward to welcoming visitors and enjoy the day with sense of humor. Local band La Charanga will add music and dance to the show.

The event will attract delegates from the entire fruit and vegetable sector (agricultural businesses and entrepreneurs) as well as the general public.

Almeria will proudly revamp its flagship product with a complete and varied program of activities and workshops. There is no better world capital for tomatoes than the city of Almeria.
