The country achieved a new record in volume and value in 2021.
Spain broke its pepper export record for yet another year, both in terms of volume and value. The country exported 891.6 million kilos of peppers abroad, i.e. 67.77% more than ten years ago, for 1,339.98 million euro, 10.34% more than in the previous year and 108 .3% more than 10 years ago, according to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the Estacom statistical service.
The main destinations of Spanish peppers
Just over 3 out of every 10 peppers that Spain exported in 2021 were destined for Germany. In fact, in this last year Germany purchased 280 million kilos of peppers from Spain, i.e. 1.19% more than the 277.6 million kilos it imported in 2020. The value of these imports increased by 12.63% over the previous year, going from 397.06 million euro in 2020 to 447.2 million euro, and an average price of 1.59 €/kg last year.
France ranked second with a volume of 127.07 million kilos and a value of 185.92 million euros. France paid an average of € 1.4/kg for the Spanish pepper in 2021.
The United Kingdom ranked third with 122.09 million kilos (17.06 million kilos more than in the previous year) worth 195.31 million euros (52.2 million euros more than in 2020). The average price paid by the UK was €1.6/kg, the best price among the five major importers of Spanish pepper.
The Netherlands ranked fourth with 80.72 million kilos worth 112.67 million euros and an average price of € 1.4/kg.
Finally, Italy ranked fifth after having purchased 62.01 million kilos of Spanish peppers in 2021 for 69.3 million euros, at an average price of € 1.12/kg.
