Olympic medalist Gemma Mengual recently visited the solar greenhouses of Almeria within the framework of the Cute Solar campaign and thanks to the Association of Organizations of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Andalusia (APROA). In an interview, released by Aenverde, a publication by the Association of Organizations of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Almeria (Coexphal), the athlete said she was amazed by the greenhouses.
She said she was struck by their cleanliness and the perfection of the vegetables. "The tomatoes had an incredible flavor, color, and shape. It was incredible," she stated. Mengual said she was in awe at the volume of vegetables produced, the optimal treatment given to the products, and how producers took advantage of natural energies, such as the sun to produce these foods without harming the planet.
Gemma Mengual visited the greenhouses accompanied by nutritionist Mario Ortiz, chef Rafuel, and journalist Samanta Villar. They all visited a greenhouse and a handling/packaging warehouse where they learned how the crops are grown and then classified for marketing. Another day, they visited a greenhouse with Lola Gomez, the manager of Clisol, who explained to them the life cycle of plants, how natural resources are optimized in solar greenhouses to grow fruits and vegetables naturally, sustainably, and healthy under the best conditions. The issue of biological control to combat pests was one of the issues that caught their attention the most. Then, they went to Tony Garcia Espacio Gastronómico where they participated in a cooking show with the help of the chef from Almeria.
