Production of raspberries in Poland

In the European Union, Poland is the leader in the market for raspberries with the share of 51% in the production (data for 2020). Spain is also a major producer with the share of 22% in the production of these fruit, followed by Portugal with the share of 12%.

Cultivation area and yields
Raspberries are the third, in terms of the production scale, after strawberries and currants, species of berries cultivated in Poland. The share of raspberries in the harvest of berries is at a level of about 25%. In recent years, the cultivation area of raspberries has been subject to slight changes and ranged from 28 to 30 thousand ha. Last year, the harvest of raspberries in Poland amounted to 116 thousand tonnes.

Regional diversification of the production of raspberries
In Poland, the majority of plantations of raspberries are located in the Lubelskie Voivodeship. In recent years, the harvest in this voivodeship has accounted for about 85% of the domestic production of these fruit. The lower average share in the domestic harvest of raspberries was that of the following voivodeships: Mazowieckie, Zachodniopomorskie and Podkarpackie.

Foreign trade
A large part of the domestic harvest of raspberries is intended for export. Last year, the export of fresh raspberries accounted for about 23% of the harvest and of frozen raspberries – for about 73% of the harvest  The Polish fruit-growing industry is dominated by the cultivation of raspberries for processing, especially for frozen products. This determines the export profile. Last year, the export of frozen raspberries was about 64 thousand tonnes. The largest customer of frozen raspberries from Poland was Germany, to which almost 21 thousand tonnes, i.e. about 36% of the export volume of these fruit, were sold. Large quantities of frozen raspberries were sold to Belgium and smaller quantities – to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Belarus and Sweden. Fresh raspberries are exported on a smaller scale than frozen fruit. In 2020, about 19 thousand tonnes of fresh raspberries were exported. The main export destination was Germany, to which about 63% of the total export of raspberries were sent. The important customer was also the Netherlands. Much smaller quantities of raspberries were exported to: Sweden, Italy, Austria, Belgium and France.

Poland is the fifth producer of raspberries in the world, after the Russian Federation, Mexico, Serbia and the United States. The share of Poland in the global production of raspberries is about 10%. In the European Union, Poland is the leader in the market for raspberries with the share of 51% in the production.
