Spain: Almeria imported second most tomatoes in 2020/21 campaign

According to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency), in the period between August 1, 2020, and July 31, 2021, Almeria was the Spanish province that imported the second most tomatoes, only behind Barcelona.

During the 2020/21 campaign, the Andalusian province bought 21.38 million kilos of tomatoes from other countries for a total value of €21.5 million, at an average price of € 1.006/kg.

Almeria's biggest tomato supplier was Morocco, with a total volume of 10.16 million kilos. It was followed by Portugal with 5.26 million kilos and the Netherlands with 4.64 million kilos.

Barcelona was the leading importer of tomatoes, as it purchased 29.62 million kilos of tomatoes during the campaign at an average price of € 0.788/kg and a total value of €23.33 million. Of this volume, 11.22 million kilos were bought from the Netherlands, 7.8 million kilos from Belgium, 2.48 million from Portugal, and 3.26 million kilos from Morocco.

The third province that bought the most tomatoes from other countries during the campaign was Madrid, with a volume of 18 million kilos, a total value of €15.4 million, and an average price of € 0.86/kg. Madrid purchased 10.75 million kilos of tomato from Portugal, 3.38 from Belgium, 1.81 from the Netherlands, and 0.82 million kilos from Morocco. The remainder came from various sources.
