Large strawberry grower tests harvest forecasting technology

Soft fruit grower Genson Group and tech company OneThird are working together to reduce food waste by predicting when to harvest. In a video, the Brabant Development Corporation reported about the collaboration. Strawberry grower Mari van den Heuvel and Marco Snikkers from OneThird tell more about it.

The grower estimates that about 30 tons of strawberries are 'rejected' annually and have to be sold as class 2 due to wrong harvest predictions. With optical sensors, OneThird can measure chemical and biological processes and use artificial intelligence to make decisions about them. The technique, which Marco talked about earlier this year at GroentenNieuws, is now approved for harvest forecasting, and more precisely, to predict the fruit's shelf life.
