France: Exotic citrus fruit grown in Roscoff greenhouses

The French region of Roscoff has more to offer than just onions! Gilles Le Bihan and Jacques Jacob, two Breton producers, have challenged themselves to produce high-end exotic citrus fruit in Brittany.

Green and red caviar lemons, Calamondin, Buddha’s Hand (cedrat), Yuzu, as well as Limequat, Kumquat, Bergamote and Meyer lemons. In total, the two partners grow nearly 10 varieties and some 2,000 plants in an old greenhouse from 1974.

“Instead of destroying it, we thought of growing an atypical production. Thanks to the exceptional climate in Roscoff, with relatively mild temperatures in summer and winter, we manage to grow this type of citrus fruit.”

The fruits are marketed under the brand Les Saveurs de Jade. The caviar lemon is mainly intended for local restaurants and some shippers who deal with specialty stores. The other products are mostly sold during the Christmas holidays.
