KWS Vegetables Italia boasts large tomato assortment

The open day organized by KWS Vegetables Italia on June 23, 2021, at azienda agricola Falcone in Fondi (Latina) was the first official event of the company after its acquisition by Geneplanta, which has been working on the genetic improvement of professional plants for years. The event was a true exhibition on table tomatoes.

But the two protagonists of the day were Lipari F1 midiplum and GNP71271 F1 oblong tomatoes.

"Lipari F1 is an early-ripening midiplum tomato. The plant is strong, with short internodes and meaty regular rachises. Fruits boast an excellent texture and long shelf-life, deep red color, and a Brix level of 7.5," reports Alberto Spagnoli, crop manager at KWS Vegetables Italia.

"What is more, it has an excellent tolerance to blossom-end rot and resistances that make it suitable to be grown all over Italy, so much so that it adapts well to fall-winter transplants in Sicily and spring-summer transplants in the rest of Italy. Lipari F1 boasts a high resistance (HR) to ToMV: 0-2, TSWV, Fol: 0-1, Va:0 and Vd:0, and an intermediate resistance (IR) to Ma, Mi, Mj, and TYLCV".

Mario Liuzzo explains that growing Lipari F1 "guarantees high-quality and continuous productions throughout the crop cycle. Traders appreciate its excellent consistency and versatility. In Sicily, traders are requesting labels to distinguish it from the rest and achieve higher remunerations."

The GNP71271 F1 oblong (San Marzano) variety, instead, grows fruits of a deep green color that turn red when fully ripe.

"The distinguishing trait of GNP71271 F1 is its uniform color and homogeneous passing from green to red. What is more, this variety is suitable to be harvested in red bunches, green bunches, and as red single fruits."

"GNP71271 F1 boasts an excellent texture and shelf-life. What is more, it has a high resistance (HR) to ToMV: 0-2, TSWV, Fol:0,1,2, Va:0, Vd:0, and an intermediate resistance (IR) to Ma, Mi, Mj".

Entrepreneur Alberto Falcone, who hosted the event, comments that he would "recommend these tomatoes for their abundant high-quality production, and also because they are easy to grow as they do not require specific agronomic techniques. Plus commercial results are good too."

KWS Vegetables Italia is working on all tomato types important for the Italian market – stay tuned!
