This summer, Michigan State University offers several online greenhouse courses. Greenhouse growers who are new to the industry or those who are interested in brushing up on their knowledge can now sign up for the summer sessions of four self-paced courses in Michigan State University Extension’s Online College of Knowledge greenhouse series: Abiotic Disorders of Greenhouse Crops, Greenhouse and Horticultural Lighting, Biological Control for Greenhouse Growers and Floriculture Root Zone Management. Registration for all courses ends June 11, 2021.

Abiotic Disorders of Greenhouse Crops course
Abiotic plant problems are those that are caused by non-living things, such as cultural or environmental conditions. This course is intended for greenhouse and ornamental plant growers interested in learning how insect pests, disease, nutrition, and the greenhouse environment and cultural practices affects plant growth thereby inducing or contributing to the onset of abiotic disorders of greenhouse crops. This course will guide you through the diagnostic process to learn what abiotic factors can cause plant problems causing top growth symptoms (on either foliage, stem or flower buds) or root symptoms.

Greenhouse and Horticultural Lighting course
Participants will learn about photoperiodic versus photosynthetic lighting in this three-month, self-paced online course about greenhouse and horticultural lighting. This course is intended for greenhouse and ornamental plant growers and others interested in learning about the fundamental concepts about how plants respond to light quality, quantity and duration.

Biological Control for Greenhouse Growers course
Students will learn fundamental concepts and research-based information in this three-month, self-paced online course. The course is intended for greenhouse growers and others interested in learning about the fundamental concepts of biological control and the challenges and opportunities associated with a biological control pest management program. The content of the course covers introductory materials to more advanced concepts such as utilizing banker plants.

Online summer Root Zone Management course
This course is intended for greenhouse and ornamental plant growers and others interested in learning about the fundamental concepts about irrigation water, media, and their effects on plant nutrition. The course covers the latest practical information on root zone management techniques for ornamental crops in a greenhouse.
