"Providing better growing conditions for your crops with weed mats"

No matter where your farm is or what crop you are planting, the challenges & risks remain the same when it comes down to controlling soil or substrate moisture, weeds and erosion. This is why the team with Galuku created the Coconut Fibre Weed Mats. "Growers worldwide are managing their potted or in-ground crops better, using weed mats to reduce the cost of hand weeding, improve water distribution and keep their plants in excellent condition," they say.

Prevent wind-borne seeds
"Weeds developing throughout the crop due to airborne transmission can be expensive. This is both due to the loss in production (through resource competition) and through the cost of mechanical removal," says Andy Swan with Galuku. "But there’s a solution that is easy to implement and highly effective," he adds. "Weed mats!"

"The physical protection of a weed mat stops wind-borne seed settling in your pot or bag and generating weeds. Flexible and natural, our Coconut Fibre Weed Mats are able to continue protecting young trees, bushes and vine crops as they grow."

Reduce hand weeding
With your crop protected from wind-borne seeds, the need to hand weed is dramatically reduced. "Save on labour, improve crop conditions and reduce the risk of crop damage via the clumsy mechanical removal of weeds by not having to clear the immediate crop cultivation area."

Reduce evaporation
Additionally, Galuku Coconut Fibre Weed Mats reduce evaporation. "This helps you to extend the time between watering your crop, minimising both water & fertiliser loss – improving your bottom line. The physical properties of the mats also allow for maximum use of the soil or substrate by allowing root growth to utilise the area directly beneath the weed mat due to a more consistent soil/substrate moisture profile and buffered temperature zone."

Create better-growing conditions overall
"Long-lasting and hardwearing, our mats help create the perfect conditions for beneficial microorganisms that fight the growth of algae and liverworts," Andy concludes. "The buffer in the rootzone temperature – keeps the crop cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Plus, the improved water distribution of Galuku Weed Mats encourages stronger, healthier roots."
