Packing urban cultivated leafy greens

Vertical farming is based on the idea of growing more food in less space, regardless of weather, wind, and changing seasons. It is also the idea behind Urban Oasis – a young and forward-thinking company based in Stockholm. The vision is to deliver healthy and sustainable food to people, right where they live. And this takes place from an oasis, located deep below Stockholm’s city life. Here the company grows organic leafy greens under artificial light, with recycled water, without soil – in a 100% controlled environment.

“A compact packing machine – it makes sense here where space is tight"
”We harvest our products exactly when they are at their very best”, says Johanna Öhlén Meschke, CMO at Urban Oasis. ”They go directly to consumers who appreciate fresh produce. Therefore, we have chosen a packaging solution that is as logical and uncomplicated as our entire other set-up, and likewise easy to go to. The Schur®StarLight Packing Machine can be moved, operated, and cleaned by one person – and everyone can do it. It is compact, it does not take up much space, and it is so easy to move around. This all makes sense here where space is tight.”

Zippered CPP bag preserves produce freshness
The eye-catching Urban Oasis bags signal Swedish quality and ultimate freshness. The products are packed manually into CPP bags, keeping the greens fresh and crispy. With the reclosability feature, food waste is avoided: In a hermetically closed zippered bag, left-over product will not dry out when stored in the refrigerator. And the cleaned zipper bag is convenient to reuse for other purposes. Eventually, it can be included in a recycling system, as CPP is a single-layer material that does not require separation.

Shortest possible supply chain: “We grow where people live”
Johanna Öhlén Meschke continues: ”Urban Oasis has thought about sustainability and resource economy everywhere. We grow in the full height of the cellar, in a closed environment. We are not dependent on season, but harvest all year round. And since we are located in the center of the city, we avoid long and environmentally harming transportation. Overall, we aim for a constant and shortest possible supply chain.

In addition to contributing to the reduction of food waste, it makes special sense today when most people want to know where their food comes from.”

The Schur®Star Concept packs all types of products
More than 500 companies worldwide pack all types of products – including fruit and vegetables - utilising the Schur®Star Concept.

The compact Schur®StarLight Packing Machine requires a minimum of space. From the moment it is connected to power, the machine is fully operational. Despite the low investment, it offers high automation, extreme adaptability, and great flexibility.

The Urban Oasis machine is equipped with a printer for adding product data to the bag, such as a lot number. Additionally, the machine can be combined with various weighing and filling equipment, and it can pack products into a large variety of bag formats, sizes, and materials – also in a semi- or fully automatic process.
