Last week producers from the province of Huelva started harvesting the San Andrea and Fortuna strawberry early varieties; the first strawberries of the 2020/2021 campaign. Alberto Garrocho, the president of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Strawberry of Huelva (Freshuelva), said the strawberries had great quality and were already in their usual destination markets.
Garrocho stressed that the fruit had the perfect amount of sugar and ripeness. Despite being early varieties, he said, they are a very representative product of the quality that can be obtained in the campaign starting February.
This season, Huelva will devote 11,630 hectares to produce berries, i.e. 1.8% less than in the previous season. Strawberries account for just over 50% of the total area with 6,105 hectares, 2% less than in the 2019/20 campaign.
The blueberry is the berry that presented an increase in its surface, specifically of 7.20% with a total of 3,310 hectares. This is mainly because the shrub enters commercial production after three years of planting.
The area devoted to raspberry decreased by 10% and totaled 2,070 hectares. This area won't be in production at the same time, as the varietal diversity allows producers to collect raspberries in autumn and spring.
The area devoted to blackberries, on the other hand, was the same as in the past season and stood at 145 hectares.
