The online supermarket shows solid growth in the just published 2019/20 annual accounts and for the first time creates a positive operating result with an EBITDA of DKK 13 million. kr.

With a turnover of 2.1 billion., the online supermarket achieved growth of 45% and improved operating profit by 55%. This means that the company has for the first time shown a positive EBITDA result in the newly published annual accounts for the period 1 August 2019 to 31 July 2020, amounting to DKK 13 million.

A special year "It has been a very special year. In the first 7½ months of the year we saw growth of 22-25% at EBITDA level. In the last 4½ months of the financial year we experienced a real explosion in demand when COVID-19 hit Denmark. The country ended up in a lockdown, which resulted in 100% growth. Despite the many extraordinary costs involved in growing so rapidly, I am proud that we have been able to maintain earnings at EBITDA level throughout the year", said Stefan Plenge, CEO and founder of

Create 1000 new jobs by 2020 Due to the high demand, the company had to change workflows and hire hundreds of new colleagues in a very short period of time in order to meet the many wishes of new customers. Nemlig expects to create 1000 new jobs in 2020. Most of the new recruits were to expand capacity in both operations and customer service, but specialists in mainly IT were also recruited to support the growth.

"I am very impressed with the absolutely extraordinary effort we have made as a team. In terms of growth, we have made 2-3 years progress in our development path in a very short time. We need a strong team spirit to be able to cope with the growth we have experienced and at the same time welcome 1,000 new colleagues on board", says Stefan Plenge.

Smallest food waste in the grocery sector When Nemlig looks to the future, the online supermarket will become a leader in sustainability and will play a leading role in making messages more sustainable in Denmark. The company will increase packaging recycling and from the summer of 2021 the company will switch to 100% renewable energy from the sun via Northern Europe's largest solar park.

They will also focus on reducing food waste, where has taken the lead among supermarkets in Denmark.

"We are proud to have the absolute lowest food waste in the industry, representing only 0.5% of sales. It's a third of the food waste of a traditional supermarket, and that clearly shows that online shopping can help reduce the grocery industry's climate footprint", says Stefan Plenge.
