The Israeli startup Vertical Field, based in Ra'anana, develops modular solutions for vertical agriculture to respond to the demand for fresh local food in urban settings.
The company offers portable greenhouses that are approximately the size of a shipping container, ranging from 20 to 40 feet, that can be parked in multiple spaces to grow vegetables within large cities thanks to the use of geoponic technology and their Smart design. According to the company, these solutions are especially useful in 'urban food deserts' that often lack available space for growing food.
One of the advantages of this type of farm is that they produce less waste and reduce the water needed to grow crops by up to 90%. In addition, the greenhouses' controlled conditions allow growing the crops throughout the whole year. Moreover, the crops generally have shorter growth cycles and longer useful life.
