Rafael Lopez, Hortofrutícola MABE SAT:

Spain: "The prices in this campaign are not remunerative"

Hortofrutícola MABE SAT, the agricultural transformation society of Almeria, is made up of approximately 450 farmers who work with pepper, cucumber, aubergine, zucchini, melon, and watermelon.

Rafael Lopez, the manager of the entity, stated in an interview that currently practically all of their products were being harvested, except the melon and watermelon which are spring products. "The campaign's volume in kilos has been similar to the last one, which was very good, and its prices are ok although the markets are stopped," he said.

In this sense, prices are not remunerative and the European market isn't responding to the market of origin; a situation we believe will improve in the coming months, he said.

According to Lopez, in the last campaign sales amounted to almost 120 million euro and 120 million kilos. "Our main clients are Germans, 40% is sent to that country, and the remaining percentage is distributed between Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom."

Regarding the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the manager of Hortofrutícola MABE SAT said they hoped both parties reached an agreement that wouldn't impose any bureaucratic procedures or customs fees that prevent them from exporting. In the last campaign, the UK accounted for nearly 15% of its shipments.
