Spanish tomato exports fall for the seventh consecutive season

According to a report prepared by Hortoinfo based on data from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency), Spanish tomato exports have decreased for seven consecutive seasons. Spain went from exporting 985.34 million kilos of tomatoes in the 2013/2014 campaign to 728.79 million kilos in the 2019/2020 campaign, which started on August 1 and ended on July 1.

In the last campaign, Spanish tomato exports amounted to 932.03 million euro and had an average price of € 1.279/kg.

Top 5 importers
In the 2019/2020 campaign, the three largest importers of Spanish tomatoes, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, purchased 49.78% of the total volume that Spain exported.

Germany was the main destination with a volume of 179.97 million kilos worth 273.08 million euro. It was also the country that paid the best prices for Spanish tomatoes among the 5 largest buyers, with an average price of € 1.517/kg.

It was followed by France, with a total of 110.54 million kilos worth 119.72 million euro and an average price of € 1.083/kg.

The United Kingdom ranked third with 98.35 million kilos worth 121.08 million euro and an average price of € 1.231/kg.

The Netherlands was the fourth-biggest importer with 72.28 million kilos, 87.07 million euro, and an average price of € 1.205/kg.

Poland ranked fifth 62.38 million kilos, 66.29 million euro, and an average price of € 1.063/kg.

Moroccan exports continue to increase
Based on data from COMTRADE, the UN statistical service, Moroccan tomato exports have constantly grown year after year, going from 372.24 million kilos in 2010 to 587.82 million kilos in 2019. The largest customers for Moroccan tomatoes in 2019 were France with 346.94 million kilos, the United Kingdom with 62.55 million kilos, Russia with 52.19 million kilos, Spain with 49.4 million kilos, and the Netherlands with 38.33 million kilos.
