Young horticulturalists pay digital visit to greenhouse

They like to get together, the Tuinbouw Jongeren Oostland, a group of young Dutch growers. For the enjoyable drinks, but mostly to share knowledge about the cultivation and all kinds of affairs going on in the sector. And if that is not possible due to Corona measures, it does not mean no information can be exchanged.

High-wire cultivation
Recently, the members went to visit a grower, as they often do, but now digitally. This time it was Jan Reijm of cucumber nursery Reijm & Zn who gave a virtual tour. Jan: "Part of the board and a cameraman were present. The members watched through a Facebook live stream and were able to ask questions."

These questions were also about the cultivation. "Since 2014, we've been growing cucumbers on high-wire. A way that is more often used in Limburg and Brabant, but is not yet standard in the west of the Netherlands, although it is occurring more and more."

Other questions were about the sale of the cucumbers which are being supplied through Oxin Growers to Bakker Barendrecht for Albert Heijn.

Many visitors
Interest in the digital tour was high. "There were 35 members who joined us live and many other members viewed the visit afterwards. During a normal visit to a company, around 45 to 50 members participate. The physical visit, feeling and seeing with your own eyes, will be preferred by most, but I can see virtual visits occurring again in the future."
