The agro-food products of local producers are extremely appreciated by Poles. A survey conducted by UCE Research shows that almost 90 percent of consumers want retail chains in Poland to be required to obtain those products, at least partially, from local producers.
The introduction of such regulations is supported by claims that if they came into force, most people would be eager to buy local products. Moreover, it would improve the functioning of the economy and agriculture.
Experts say it would also increase the quality of food sold in stores and bring prices down. Retail chains would likely see increased sales and would also attract customers currently buying at marketplaces.
At the same time, experts say that for retail chains, sourcing exclusively from local growers would bring major challenges in terms of store supply and logistics.
"Should this happen, the chain's challenge will be to negotiate appropriate prices that will encourage consumers to buy local products. This, of course, can translate into contracts with Polish and foreign producers, because the space in the store will have to be divided into a larger number of suppliers," says Arkadiusz Paprzycki from the Healthy Shopping application.
According to MondayNews, in mid-May this year, the MP of the ruling coalition asked the Minister of Development about the possibility of forcing retail chains to supply agricultural and food products from the powiat where they are located. There is no answer yet.
However, there are results of a survey in which Poles were asked about such a solution, and it shows that 85.7 percent of Poles would support such a measure. If the above mentioned obligation came into force, as many as 89.3 percent of respondents would be happy to buy local products.
Arkadiusz Paprzycki says that this is mainly due to the fact that such articles are considered healthier than those imported from afar. "In recent years, Poles have been paying more and more attention to the quality of the food they consume. Moreover, they want to support domestic companies. Local patriotism has become clearer in the current situation, marked by the pandemic."
