"New strawberry variety has passed the test"

For Italian growers, Rossetta, the new Premium Priced strawberry launched on the market in early 2020, has been successful in both agronomic and commercial terms. Harvesting will continue for a few weeks, then the new year will be planned. FreshPlaza talked to a few producers, technicians and operators.

Domenico Cuccarese, a producer from Metaponto (Basilicata), explained that he is pleased that he has planted just over a hectare. ''To me, Rossetta® has already passed the test. The first harvesting operations took place in early January and the cultivar can be as much as 30 days earlier than other known varieties, and we all know what it means to get to the market early in economic terms."

"These strawberries manage to achieve as much as €0.50-0.60/kg more than Sabrosa. For the 2020/21 campaign, I am planning on planting around 6 hectares depending on plant availability."

Agronomist Gianfranco Barletta commented that "Rossetta® is a remontant variety that boasts constant grades and excellent texture and Brix level. I think it should be considered for the south of Italy. Harvesting will continue for another month and many producers have already decided to plant it for next year."

Technician Teodoro Talento from Coop. Sole, which owns 10 hectares of Rossetta® strawberries, explained that "this variety has many strengths in addition to being good to eat. However, agronomic techniques must be perfected - at least in our area - to optimize production. Anyway we will increase the hectares as of next year."

Apofruit sales director Mirco Zanelli says that "we are testing this new variety patented by Nova Siri Genetics on one hectare in total and we are expecting to increase the hectares already as of next year. It is an early variety that boasts a constant production and a shiny color."
