"New cucumber standard for high wire in France"

The team with De Ruiter continues to stay connected with growers during these uncertain times through the creative use of technology. On Thursday 23rd April, De Ruiter had the pleasure of inviting French high wire cucumber growers to an online, “Technical Coffee Session”, focusing on Garpo. Garpo is already grown by growers in the Netherlands for high wire crops and also in umbrella crops.

For many, the webinar setting was a new and appreciated method of communication. The overall aim of the event was to exchange knowledge and share best practices among growers. Garpo is a new De Ruiter variety with resistance against CGMMV and Oidium (powdery mildew). Garpo has a vigorous and generative plant habit and produces attractive green fruits. It has a high yield potential and good endurance.

During the first session of the online event, Maxime Coqué (De Ruiter Technical Account Manager) supported by Gilbert Heijens (Horti-Consult), led the exchanges with growers sharing their knowledge about Garpo and answering their technical questions. Planting density, climate and irrigation were all discussed, as well as plant load and fruit selection. Future “Technical Coffee Sessions” will be organised in the weeks ahead to further these discussions and ensure a successful growing season.

Garpo is only one of the varieties available in De Ruiter’s portfolio. With Davida and Loustik, De Ruiter has a variety to suit every growing situation. Davida is a CGMMV resistant variety, with a high yield potential and a good fruit quality; ideal for an umbrella crop. To ensure a successful season for all Davida growers, De Ruiter will send regular growing tips created in partnership with Gilbert Heijens. The first growing tip was sent at the beginning of April and the second one will be sent very soon!

After more than 15 years of production, Loustik has become a standard variety in France. Loustik is a fast variety with a high resistance against Oidium and a high yield potential.
