18,560 tons of vegetables have been collected in the Volgograd region since the beginning of 2020, which is almost twice as much as in the same period of 2019.
According to information provided by the Committee on the Agriculture of Volgograd region, the main share of the produced vegetables is taken by cucumbers, 14,240.7 tons of which have been collected. Production of tomatoes has increased significantly, since the beginning of the year the crops have reached 4,290 tons, which is 267.5% of the level of the same period of 2019. Moreover, the greenhouse growers have produced 29.3 tons of other vegetables.
The realization of considerable investment projects has allowed for the stabilization of greenhouse production. Thus, within the past five years, the greenhouse acreage in the regions has increased by 2.5 times, from 48 to 115 ha, which was encouraged by the state support provided to investors. The governor of the Volgograd region, Mr. Andrey Bocharov, intends to increase the greenhouse acreage further to 150 ha. It would allow the region to completely meet the demand for locally grown greenhouse produce.
Volgograd regional growers expand their assortment too: in January 2020, the first eggplants were harvested in the agricultural complex Volzhsky. The company has been recognized as one of the most high-tech ones in the Southern Federal District. Currently the enterprise continues the construction of the second phase of the fifth generation greenhouses.
Agricultural complex Volzhsky, LLC OVoschevod, AIC Teplichniy and GUP VOSHP Zarya are the key greenhouse producers of the Volgograd region. Botanica cucumbers and tomatoes as well as Zarya cucumbers have won prizes at the 27 International Exhibition of Food Products Prodexpo 2020, conducted in Moscow.
Due to the systematic complex work on the development of the agricultural complex, conducted since 2014, the Volgograd region has been occupying a stable position and is among the ten leading regions of the Russian Federation in terms of agricultural produce. The development of melioration, shaping of the distribution area, construction of processing facilities and timely receipt of state support have returned the region the status of the country's vegetable garden.
