Just in time for the first spring-like days, Reichenau Gemüse starts the season with the first main product, lettuces. A lot of light and warmth have greatly favoured the growth of the greens, according to managing director of the vegetable cooperative Johannes Bliestle. Around 350,000 heads of different types of lettuce are waiting to be harvested each week on the vegetable island in Lake Constance.
The lettuces are not only produced according to the specifications of the Baden-Württemberg quality mark, but are also awarded the EU seal of origin for regional quality, the so-called g.g.A. seal. This means that the European Union has been awarding these lettuces a specially protected status since 2008.
The season for early lettuces from the vegetable island extends from February to April. In addition to the classic lettuce, the multitude of varieties has increased several times over. The dominant type of lettuce is butterhead lettuce. From the island of Reichenau alone, around 1.5 million heads of lettuce will go out to the consumer in spring.

2.5 million heads of lettuce
In total, more than 2.5 million lettuces are available from the Reichenau vegetable garden in spring. These lettuces are harvested by hand in the early morning hours every day and transported immediately to the cooperative's refrigerated marketing hall. From there they are transported directly to the customer in ultra-modern refrigerated vehicles. Reichenau Gemüse is offered exclusively in the region. This guarantees optimal product freshness, but also stands for short transport routes - fresh, crisp lettuces from the region.
