On January 24, the presence of the tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) was officially confirmed in the Spanish Autonomous Region of Andalusia. It was detected in six greenhouses in the municipalities of Vícar and El Ejido, according to a report to which the newspaper Noticias de Almeria has had access. In any case, two of them seem to have solved the problem already. The process that allowed the detection of the virus started in October 2019.
Measures
To prevent the spread of this harmful organism, the Council has ordered that all the plants present in greenhouses number 1, 2, 3 and 4 be destroyed. All plant material must be removed.
The destruction of plants must be carried out in such a way as to ensure that the plant waste cannot spread the virus. The process is being carried out under the supervision of the Territorial Delegation of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of Almería. Also, the next crop planted should not belong to the Solanaceae family.
Before the cultivation of Solanaceae, the soil must be disinfected by solarization, closing the greenhouse for at least 30 days in order to raise the temperature inside. If sacks of substrate are used, they must be replaced.
Before the planting of the next crop, the structure of the greenhouses will be disinfected with products recognized to be effective against the tobamovirus. It will also be necessary to replace or disinfect the plastics of the soil padding, as well as the stakes, rings, boxes and pallets.
