The horticultural sector gathers vast amounts of (plant) data daily. FVO acknowledges the strategic value of this plant data. In consideration of its growers, FVO drew up a Data Protocol. This Data Protocol enables growers to control their own data. The protocol attempts to facilitate the data exchange between the growers (FVO) and the demanding parties like suppliers, who are seeking for data for i.e. executing research. FVO is convinced that promoting data exchange is the way forward to stimulate innovation in the entire sector.
Fundament
Michiel F. van Ginkel, chairman of FVO: “The usage of data picks up steam. An opportunity for growers and the entire supply chain, although, within the boundaries of safe usage and in which the means of basic principles are guaranteed. For which Glas4.0 Data Protocol lays the fundament.”
Enclosed agreement
The objective of the Data Protocol and the enclosed agreement is to offer the data supplier (the grower) and the data user (the solution provider/supplier) the possibility to make clear arrangements. The arrangement defines the owner of the data and under which conditions the owner is allowed to make use of this data. Furthermore, the agreement states under which conditions the data user is obliged to destruct the data it possesses.
Facilitate data sharing
Frank van Kleef, chairman Grower Coordination Team GLAS4.0: “We are convinced that smart data use will strengthen our greenhouse production method. Nevertheless, we see risks as well. We notice growers become more and more cautious to share data with suppliers, which hinders the desired innovations. The GLAS4.0 Data Protocol facilitates data sharing within the right framework.”
To encourage innovation within the horticultural sector we do not exclude any data exchange for this data protocol. We recommend all stakeholders to consider very carefully which data to share and that the data will be recorded very accurate. The agreement concerning the data exchange consists, among others, of the definition of ownership, confidentiality, eligible data use and when usage can be put to a halt.
