Price of Chinese eggplant is falling and unlikely to recover in the near future

The eggplant is a vital ingredient in the kitchens of Beijing. The price of eggplants is currently falling. The main reason for this development is that the price of eggplants was relatively high last winter and many farmers expanded the surface area devoted to eggplant plantation. The production volume rapidly increased this summer. Furthermore, many eggplant varieties enter the market around the same time. The price of eggplants is unlikely to recover in the near future.

The price of eggplants was relatively low this summer, in particular during the period between August and October. The price was only around 0.5-0.6 yuan [0.07-0.09 USD] per 0.5 kg in this period.

The volume of eggplant seedlings was relatively large this autumn. The volume was around 33% larger than last year. If the weather conditions remain stable, the production volume of eggplants will grow even further this winter and next spring. The price will then remain lower than last year.
