This Monday, Guyana officials announced a temporary restriction on the importation of romaine lettuce. It said the move comes on the heels of an outbreak of the E. coli bacteria in the lettuce in the United States.
Most strains of E. coli are not harmful. However, some types can cause illness including diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and sometimes vomiting.
The National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute said it will not be issuing import permits and will recall all permits issued within the last three months for romaine lettuce.
The agency said the restriction will be removed when Guyana is notified by the US Food and Drug Administration that the threat has been removed from the product.
