According to the latest data published by the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Council of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of Andalusia, 97% of the strawberries produced in Spain came from Andalusia, with the province of Huelva accounting for 99.7% of the total: 341,556 tons. Out of that volume, more than 70% was exported to foreign countries, mainly in the European Union.
After the production peak reached in 2015 (2014/15 campaign), the strawberry volume has gradually declined, although it has now reached a fairly stable level. In the last two campaigns, the acreage has been expanded, given the recovery of prices. In the 2018-2019 campaign, it has reached 6,843 hectares.
The Andalusian strawberry sector is characterized by its great export vocation. Between the months of December 2018 and June 2019, the exported volume reached 239.3 million kilos worth 471.5 million Euro, which is about 1.97 Euro per kilo.
The vast majority of Andalusian strawberry exports go to the European Union. The main trading partner is Germany, which in the 2018/19 campaign received 31.7% of the total (29.9% in 2017/18). It was followed by the United Kingdom (15.5%), France (14.6%) and Italy (10.3%). Far behind we have Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria or Belgium, with imports exceeding 8,000 tons.
