"Fresh-cut produce should be paid more than 49 eurocents a bag"

On 17th September 2019, Bonduelle Italia organized a tour at the Salera production facility and of the facility in San Paolo d'Argon (Bergamo) to illustrate how fresh-cut products are made.

"You have seen how much work goes into a single bag of fresh-cut vegetables with your own eyes. The passion, commitment, professionalism and technologies. Yet big retailers pay very little for these products - a bag is bought at 47-52 eurocents and resold at 99 cents or a little more. I believe something must change so all protagonists of the chain can continue to invest and produce," explained Andrea Montagna, CEO of Bonduelle Italia.

Antonio Salvatore described the characteristics of the facility: it is active 7 days from midnight to 7 pm then, between 7 pm and 11.59 pm, everything is cleaned. During the year, the facility only closes for eight days for the main festivities. In a year, it produces around 20 thousand tons of salad placed in 110 million bags, i.e. around 350 thousand a day. There are 220 employees.

The tour was the occasion to show how much work goes into the "Le Insalate degli Agricoltori" range. "Bonduelle producers are located in proximity of the two company facilities (in the Bergamo and Salerno provinces) to guarantee the utmost freshness, as salad is bagged less than 24 hours from harvesting."

Lettuce, rocket and lamb's lettuce are available all year round and are grown by producers in Bergamo for the San Paolo D’Argon (BG) facility and in Salerno for the Battipaglia (SA) facility.

Baby spinach is grown in the Sele plain by producers near the Battipaglia facility.

Trio Freschezza is an original mix made up of mini green lettuce, red curly lettuce and green curly lettuce and is grown near the San Paolo D’Argon and Battipaglia facilities depending on the season.

Insalata di Lusia IGP is a lettuce variety with thick crunchy leaves grown in the Rovigo and Padua provinces and it is the only one in Italy and Europe with the PGI mark. It is also the only fresh-cut product with the PGI mark in Italy.
