Since the beginning of the week, tomato prices in Ukraine have continued to gradually fall under the influence of low trading activity, according to analysts of the EastFruit project.
Also, this week, producers from the southern regions of the country reported a slight reduction in the supply of open ground tomatoes on the market; however, given the decline in the demand from the fresh market and processors, they were still forced to bring prices down. In addition, the quality of those tomatoes remained unsatisfactory, which also put pressure on prices. Thus, open ground tomatoes are currently sold in bulk for 5 UAH / kg ($ 0.20 / kg), which is on average 28% cheaper than a week earlier.
The situation in the greenhouse tomato segment also remained difficult. There has reportedly been a significant reduction in the demand from large wholesale companies and retail chains, which has also led to lower prices. So, by the end of the week, greenhouse producers have been shipping tomatoes for 12-14 UAH / kg ($ 0.48-0.55 / kg), which is on average 13% cheaper than at the end of the previous working week.
It is worth noting that today, greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine are on average 25% cheaper than in the same period last year. As for open ground tomatoes, despite the reduction in prices in this segment, they currently cost on average 25% more than in early autumn 2018.
