US (CT): Aquaponics business moves from Meriden to New Britain

Trifecta Ecosystems Inc., designer of large-scale aquaponic gardening systems, has moved from Pratt Street to an urban farm in New Britain.

“We tried to purchase the old Urban Oaks Farm prior to going to Meriden,” said Eric Francis, a Trifecta founder and chief operating officer. “When it came back on the market, we purchased it. It was always our intention to grow outside of Meriden.”

Trifecta Ecosystems leased 8,400 square feet in the Meriden Enterprise Center, 290 Pratt St., three years ago and transformed it into an aquaponic growing center with a commercial kitchen. At the same time, the company received a $75,000 U.S.D.A grant to conduct research. The research ended in November.

The Urban Oaks Farm, which Trifecta purchased in January, is more than 3 acres in the heart of downtown New Britain.

The new space will allow Trifecta to handle its weekly salad subscription business, which had outgrown the Meriden facility, in addition to the educational, farm-to-table, and instructional aspects of the business.
