Russia: Tomsk region 22% self-sufficient in greenhouse vegetables

The development of greenhouse vegetable growing has been discussed in a meeting with participation of the governor of the Tomsk region, Mr. Sergey Zhvachkin.

According to the governor, the main task of the agricultural sphere is to ensure the self-sufficiency of the region in all food products. This goal has been accomplished in cattle breeding, but the vegetable growing sector is lagging behind.

Vegetables grown in the Tomsk region meet about 40% of the local demand. Self-sufficiency in greenhouse vegetables comprises only 22%. As the head of the region noted, the ratio is lower than the average in the country and in the region. As for fruits and berries, only 3% of the internal demand is met.

Citing information from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, the governor noted that in order to change the situation, certain steps should be made, first of all, the productivity of the agricultural complex in Trubachyov should be increased and second, industrial cultivation should be developed.

“This sphere is a very promising one in our country. Our organic products, such as nuts and berries, are well-known outside the region and abroad. The key to the development in this area is to accumulate production technology experience and build recognizable brands. Also, hand in hand with creating new production units, we should concentrate on scientific research”, noted Mr. Zhvachkin.
