Belgium: Ecolo wants 0% VAT on organic products

The political party Ecolo is on the rise as the elections approach. According to the latest surveys, it is the largest party in Brussels and the second largest in Wallonia.

Among its proposals, Ecolo is focusing on accelerating the transition to sustainable and organic food. To this end, it wishes to reduce VAT on unprocessed, local and organic products. The reduction could even go to 0% for products from organic farming, according to Sudpresse and La Libre Belgique.

"The idea is to make it easier to buy products that are good for our health and the environment (...) Make the healthiest choice more accessible. And also, in a global economic vision, integration in our territories with a quality of products that do not go around the world," explained Zakia Khattabi, co-president of the party.

Other initiatives in favour of sustainable development include the proposal for a 360° biodiversity strategy by creating 1,000 ha per year of nature reserves and stopping urban sprawl.
