Move from cups and shakers to small bags for snack mini tomatoes

You get tomatoes in all shapes and sizes. From cherry tomatoes and snack tomatoes to TOV and loose tomatoes. For every tomato, a suitable packaging solution has been found. These are needed to bring this product, undamaged, to the consumer. There is also a growing trend toward smaller, snack-sized packaging for tomatoes. The Dutch company, JASA, offers complete packaging solutions for various kinds of tomatoes and their types of packaging.

Cherry tomato packaging options
Tomatoes are very fragile. This is why JASA, along with the client, tries to see which line is most suited for this product. This line must pack these tomatoes as well as possible to get them to the consumer in one piece. JASA offers a packaging line for many different kinds of tomatoes. Despite this, the most popular line is that for little cherry tomatoes.

“We have noticed, also with tomatoes, more demand for smaller kinds of packaging," says Piet Pannekeet, JASA's founder. "For example, in the form of little resealable bags or small cups of snack tomatoes. These are sold at gas stations."

“In particular, we provide many packing lines for the packaging of cherry tomatoes in cups, shakers or little buckets of 250g to 1kg," explains Piet. Cherry tomatoes are, by far, the easiest tomato variety to take along as a snack. There is also a trend toward smaller packaging and less plastic with this kind of tomato.

Because of this, a shift is taking place; from cups and shakers to smaller bags of snack tomatoes. "This does not only mean less plastic, thereby making it more sustainable. The bags are also easier to reseal. This means it is even easier to take along to school or work," says Piet. "JASA also offer a complete packaging line for this."

JASA’s packaging lines can, depending on the client's wishes, process different kinds of packaging. "From the moment the tomatoes are sorted until they reach the output conveyer belt," Piet goes on to say. This company also supplies specific scales for every product. "We can also process multiple kinds of packaging in the lines, as required. The tomatoes are packed, carefully, at a high capacity too."

Packing tomatoes with no plastic
Tomatoes are usually sold loose or in a plastic flow pack tray. There is also the well-known snack tomato shaker. A sustainable alternative for tomato packaging is not excluded from the current discussions about sustainable packaging. Sleeves were introduced for apples. After this, JASA adapted the carton sleeve design. Tomatoes can now also be packaged using this environmentally-friendly type of packaging.

The tomatoes are packed in a carton tray. A carton sleeve keeps them in place. At the same time, they remain visible in the packaging. This solution is client-specific. It can be adjusted according to the product requirements. These carton sleeves, used in conjunction with the correct carton tray, create a sustainable packaging for TOVs and cherry tomatoes. This packaging is, therefore, 100% recyclable.
