“Here, at our company, the demand for tomatoes is starting. In the winter, we usually sell fewer tomatoes. This is because lit cultivated tomatoes are quite a lot more expensive than the Moroccan or Spanish product," says Mr Akarca of the Belgian company, Elite Foods. “In past while, we have been selling mainly lettuce, watercress, leeks, and carrots. However, these were in lower volumes than last year."
At Elite Foods, tomatoes are the most important product group. "We are very strong in tomatoes. We mostly sell Elite TOV, but we have also seen the demand for specialty tomatoes rising. Cherry tomatoes are becoming increasingly popular. We have, however, seen an upward trend in beef tomatoes too."
"We also have the Elite tomato, named after the company. These TOVs are well-known for their long shelf-life and good taste. We are, therefore, looking forward to supplying our clients with these nice tomatoes again," says Mr Akarca.
IFS certification
During the somewhat quieter winter months, Elite Foods focused on obtaining its IFS certification. "We got this certification on a high level, of which we are proud. We worked the whole year for this. These days, we work in a very structured manner. We also have new planning. It is important for a growing company to operate in a structured way. Because the bigger you get, the more difficult it is to arrange everything. We are expanding little by little every year. And we want to keep it this way," concludes Mr Akarca.
