Spain: Horticultural retail prices were 4.5 times greater than at origin in March

The price paid by consumers for food in March was 4.5 times higher than that received by growers, according to data from the Spanish agricultural organization COAG.

The price index at Origin and Destination, calculated by COAG, reveals that the price of foodstuffs from the agricultural sector increased by a factor of 4.88 and that of animal products by a factor of 3.31.

Among horticultural products, the most striking price differences were recorded by citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges, for which it amounted to 914%. Citrus growers have, in fact, complained about the low prices.

COAG also highlighted the price difference for garlic, as it rose from 0.66 Euro per kilo to 5.40 Euro per kilo (a difference of 718%)

The lowest difference was recorded by mushrooms. Where the grower was paid 1.90 Euro per kilo, the retail price reached 3.85 Euro per kilo (a difference of 103%).
