The Spanish Supreme Court (TS) has annulled the Tajo Hydrological Plan because it didn't set ecological flows in Aranjuez, Toledo and Talavera de la Reina.
The high court has declared the nullity of several articles that make up the rules of the hydrological plan, as reported last Saturday in a press release by the Platform for the Defense of the Tajo and Alberche Rivers of Talavera de la Reina.
The appeal before the Supreme Court was filed in 2016 by the Platform for the Defense of the Tajo and Alberche Rivers of Talavera de la Reina, the GRAMA association (Action Group for the Environment), the Plataforma de Toledo association in defense of the Tajo, the Municipality of Mantiel and the Association of Riverside Municipalities of the Entrepeñas and Buendía Reservoirs.
After learning about the sentence of the Supreme Court that 'mutilates' the Hydrological Plan of the Tajo, the president of Somos Región, Alberto Garre, has said that this is terrible news for the interests of the Region of Murcia, and "especially for the thousands of families that live from agriculture in our Region."
Garre also had words for Pablo Casado (president of the PP), "as the PP enjoyed a majority in Parliament between 2011 and 2015, but still failed to agree on a National Hydrological Plan."
For Garre, "the water transfers would be technically viable and socially beneficial. The Region of Murcia has some of the best agricultural producers in the world, capable of turning every drop of water into wealth. Agriculture is also one of the most effective means to stop the desertification that affects the peninsular south, but it is clear that we cannot allow ourselves to continue trusting in the national parties, which time and again have shown us that they don't care about the needs of the Region of Murcia."
"This is the only explanation to why after decades asking for water, we continue suffering this situation of uncertainty that slows down our growth," he stresses. Consequently, he has expressed his support to the agricultural sector and his firm commitment to promote water transfers as a solution to bring excess water to the places where it is needed.
