The value of the Region of Murcia's fruit and vegetable exports has exceeded the 2,500 million Euro for the first time, according to Proexport data. In 2018, Murcia shipped fruit and vegetables worth 2,504 million Euro to foreign destinations, which entails an increase of 3.1% compared to 2017.
This growth has been achieved with a similar export volume to that of the previous year (2,506,301 tonnes; 0.2% less). Murcia's fruit and vegetable exports account for 20.03% of the national total.
According to Juan MarĂn, president of Proexport, "despite the strong international competition and the uncertainty surrounding the fruit and vegetable sector, producers and companies keep trying to improve their results year after year." He also says that "the sector's development over the last ten years has been very significant. In 2008, Murcia exported 1.7 million tons of fruit and vegetables. In 2018, this volume had grown by 43.3%."
By countries, Germany remains the main destination for Murcian fruit and vegetable exports, with 627 million Euro and 662,905 tons, which is 25% of the total exported by the Region in 2018. The United Kingdom appears second in the ranking, with 580 million Euro and 517,464 tons (23.2% of the total). France is in third place, with 415 million Euro and 414,358 tons; 16.6% of Murcia's shipments. These three destinations account for 64.8% of the Region's sales.
